Silver Bells in the City opens the holiday season downtown

Silver Bells in the City marks the beginning of the holiday season in Lansing this Friday, Nov. 19. For more than 25 years, the city sidewalks downtown have overflowed with holiday revelers enjoying the sights and sounds of Silver
Bells in the City. Last year, the annual event attracted
more than 150,000 spectators.

Wreaths hang from light posts and storefronts, lights twinkle from every tree and bush, and holiday carols are sung out from every corner.  Between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. you can start your holiday shopping at the Silver Bells Village, located at 100 E. Allegan St. The Village will feature local artists and gourmet food vendors selling gifts for the holidays.

Many come for the performances and the downtown sites, but the Electric Light Parade draws most, a spectacle of colorful lights and impressive floats built by local companies and organizations. The parade starts at 6:10 p.m.

Of all the events, the spectacle that no holiday-loving, Michigander should miss is the lighting of Michigan’s official Christmas tree at 7:15 p.m. followed by fireworks over the Capitol dome.

Parking is free at City parking ramps after 5 p.m. For a complete listing of events, go to
